Providing fully automatic speed control via PWM, the fan uses the NE-FD1 PWM IC, specially designed by Noctua, which integrates Soft Switching Drive (SCD) technology. By providing smoother torque pulses, the SCD suppresses PWM switching noise and therefore makes the fan quieter at lower speeds.

When the fan is set to a 0% PWM duty cycle by the motherboard or a PWM fan controller it will stop. This makes it ideal for installations with semi-passive cooling that automatically turns off the fans and therefore runs completely silently when idle if the indoor temperature permits.

Combining the efficient hydrodynamic bearing concept with an additional magnet that supports self-stabilization of the rotor shaft makes Noctua's proven SSO bearing technology synonymous with extremely quiet operation and exceptional long-term stability.
